There’s a new cafe on the scene in Newtown and such a thing is forevermore greeted with squinty eyes and equal parts open embrace and folded arm defiance from the good people of the Inner West. The ghost of the old Berkelouw Bookstore is still hanging around but new guy on the block, Brewtown Newtown, sure does pack a punch. We arrived in the middle of an extremely busy Saturday and were greeted with a smile and told it would be about a 15 minute wait. The entire exchange was happily devoid of the strangely detached attitude that Newtown waiters seem so fond of at the moment. Complimentary sparkling water is offered when we sit and after a minute or two at the table my husband and I commented to one another about how truly pleasant it was to be seated inside this cafe. The ceilings are positively soaring for the Inner West, allowing this industrial chic cafe a lovely light airy feeling. We only waited about 10 minutes before we were shown to a table and I promply ordered coffees and a cinnamon sugar glazed cronut, I could wait not one second longer so dessert pre brunch had to happen. I do not have any prior cronut experience but this croissant donut hybrid thing was delicious. It was flaky like a croissant on the outside and donut-ish on the inside. And what we have heard on the grapevine about the coffee is correct, this coffee is very, very good. I ordered the corned beef hash with garden peas, poached egg and parmesan crumbs and it was wonderful, better than I even expected it to be. Not too salty, perfectly poached eggs… what more can you ask for, really. We will definitely be back. I hear they have chocolate cronuts with Boston cream, I don’t know if they didn’t have them on Saturday or if they were sold out but you can bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be back to try them. Have you sampled the spoils of Brewtown Newtown? I would definitely recommend it for a visit!
