Write on Wednesday… Choose Your Own Adventure

Write On Wednesdays Exercise 24  This week is a Choose Your Own Adventure week. Pick a prompt that takes your fancy and make it work for you. Maybe you will work on your NaNo story or another writing project or perhaps just a bit of creative exploration. You might even like to share your favorite book genre with us and then use the prompt to work on a similar theme.

If there’s something I really love, it’s choose your own adventure anything. I’m slumping, as far as NaNoWriMo goes. I’m not at my desired quota. My story is there in my mind, but my days are so full that when I get home after eight o’clock at night, I am pushed to find the energy to fire up the computer and stick the USB in, let alone start writing. But, I live in hope. There is a weekend about to happen and I have activities planned only for Saturday. NaNoWriMo, Sunday is mine.

This story is a five minute exercise I have regurgitated in the theme of my NaNoWriMo story driven by the sheer lack of time available to sort through previous WoW prompts but ultimately enthusiasm for and support of WoW.

I stirred the ice cubes in my vodka, quietly and consistently. I kept my slightly drunk eyes on them, steadfast, willing my body not to sway so much. Luke turned from the disaster in the kitchen and flung his arms about. I glanced up from my drink and saw sadness in my friend’s eyes. I felt my legs wobble beneath me but willed myself to focus on him. His eyes looked as though they would dissolve into a thousand tears at any moment. I jumped as I felt an ice cube hit my bare foot, then stumbled backwards and landed uneasily on the ottoman. Luke looked at me with misery written into his face and reached across the mess on the kitchen floor to grab his keys. Jelly dripped from them when he picked them up. He flicked it off and the keys jingled together in too merry a sound. He walked past me silently, and quietly shut the door behind him.

What a powerful piece. The narrator’s alcohol-induced helplessness, Luke’s infinite misery, the sarcastic irony of the jelly on the keys, the glass of vodka. Each part fits into every other part seamlessly to create an excellent scene. I’m eager to know more, both from before and from afterwards.
